Job Seeker FAQ

How should I use the salary calculator program in order to fully benefit my salary search?
When using the salary calculator to conduct an analysis, answer the questions as accurately as possible. Don’t worry about anyone seeing your input values or output values, and then associating them with you. We don't know who you are, nor will our salary calculator ask who you are. The salary comparisons you conduct are completely anonymous.
How do I interpret the information provided on the Output Values Page?
Salary - the recommended salary for you is the figure that you could ask for, and still expect to be employed within a reasonable timeframe. The neutral salary value is the salary currently being paid to persons whom are not subject to any gender or racial bias. The salary calculator also provides the range of salaries paid in an occupation and region. This range will assist you in conducting a salary comparison.
Alternative Fields of Employment - provides you with job description options that require a skill set similar to what you currently possess. The options shown are in all cases, the most economically viable options for you to consider. This aspect of our salary calculator is provided to enable you to maximize your earnings potential. Conducting additional salary analyses with our salary calculator will expand your compensation knowledge for your salary search.
Best Regions - provides you with the most economically viable regions of the country for you to employ your skill set. With this function, you can compare salaries in various regions.
Why does JSI ask for information relating gender and race?
Gender and race are significant determinants in the composition of a salary value. Our salary calculator is constructed in a manner which enables us to factor in a persons gender and race performing a salary search.
What exactly does this salary calculator do?

It is the ultimate salary research tool. We have engineered our salary calculator to act as a personalized labor market economist and employment counselor. It will enable you to perform a salary comparison for occupations and regions in your salary search.

What are JSI's sources of salary data?
Our datasets for our salary calculator are proprietary to JSI and are derived from: U. S. Department of Labor, U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U. S. Census Bureau, U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U. S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U. S. Federal Reserve, and proprietary sources.
How accurate are the output values from the JSI program?
The salary output values provided by the JSI salary calculator are the actual compensation values being paid in the U. S. labor market, at any given point in time. We are using the largest salary datasets of any compensation consultancy in the market. The survey methodology used to gather our data effectively eliminates sampling bias. The sample sizes for each occupation within each geographic region are statistically significant, eliminating the need for interpolations or extrapolations. Finally, our program has been developed and peer reviewed by leading statisticians from top research and academic institutions. This salary calculator is the most accurate program available for conducting a salary comparison.
How often does JSI update the data for its salary calculator?
Salary datasets are updated monthly.
How many occupations does JSI represent in its salary calculator?
Our salary calculator represents over 500 occupations. These occupations represent every occupation within every industry in the US.
Why is selecting the proper job description a challenge with these salary calculator programs?
A great question which requires a sequential answer. To begin with, you have over 500 occupations to choose from. Then you have to consider that on many occasions, an employee’s duties may overlap with other job descriptions; especially in smaller organizations. When entering employee characteristics into our salary calculator, select the occupational description that best represents the job being analyzed. The program will then output salary data relating to similarly situated employees. When our program is conducting a salary search, it is sifting through tens of millions of salary records, which must be sorted, by occupation and region to provide a meaningful salary comparison result to you.
Why are some of the occupations not represented in every geographic region?
We do not show a salary value for an occupation where the sample size is not large enough to be statistically significant. For example, if you are conducting a salary search for a Rabbi in Provo, Utah, you might be disappointed.
Are you collecting and storing data from visitors to this site?
